J-K: ‘Terrorist’ killed in gunbattle turns out mentally-challenged man

Jammu : A ‘top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) commander’, whom police and
security forces on Sunday claimed to have killed jointly in a fierce
encounter in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, has turned out to
be a mentally-challenged Hindu youth picked up by an Army jawan and a
Special Police Officer (SPO) posted with the state police.

Identifying the deceased as Abu Usman alias Adnan of Pakistan — an A
category terrorist owing allegiance to LeT, both the police and
security forces had claimed to have killed him in a fierce gunbattle
in the forests at Mehrote near Surankote. Pointing out that contact
with the slain terrorist was established on Sunday evening and during
the fire fight, he got killed whereas his two accomplices managed to
escape.

A pistol along with two magazines and some bullets, besides a diary
were shown to have been seized from him.

The events, however, unfolded when police — after postmortem of the
slain terrorist — handed over the body to local Muslims for the last
rites. When the body was being given the last bath, someone suspected
him to be a non-Muslim. The word spread and people refused to bury his
body, saying his last rites should be done in accordance to his
religion.

Following the controversy, senior police officers swung into action
and took the body to the hospital to find out his religion.
Immediately thereafter, SPO Noor Hussain was taken into custody and
during his night-long interrogation, spilled out the entire story
involving him and the Territory Army jawan Abdul Majeed.

The duo have been arrested and a murder case has been registered against them.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also
taken serious note of the matter and ordered an inquiry. The Army too
has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
