A shocker: Haryana dumps 15 million gallons of water into drain

: Nearly 15 million gallons of clean water has been finding its way into the Najafgarh drain for the past four days. And this criminal waste of water in this hot season is taking place due to complete lack of coordination between Delhi and Haryana.

The issue is expected to be raised by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit with her Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda at a meeting on Wednesday.

The matter was also discussed at the Congress Legislative Party meeting in the Delhi Assembly on Friday where some members raised the issue of Haryana stopping the supply of this clean water to the Haiderpur plant and pushing it into the Najafgarh drain instead which empties out into the Yamuna.

“It pains us to see that the canal which carries this clean water through parts of Rohini, Prembari Pul and Wazirpur has been spilling lakhs of litres of water into the Najafgarh drain,” said a Congress legislator and added that due to this the supply of water to various colonies in the northern parts of city has dropped by nearly 40 per cent.

Incidentally, this canal carries enough water for the parched Delhiites.

Expressing concern over the issue, a senior Delhi Jal Board official said the Haiderpur plant came up in two phases of 100 MGD each and the Supreme Court had on February 29, 1996, held that since Delhi’s requirement was only about three per cent of Haryana’s total water availability, Haryana would ensure that there is enough water supply to keep its ponds at the Haiderpur and Wazirabad treatment plants full.

Through optimal utilisation of the Haiderpur plant, the official said Delhi was treating nearly 210 MGD of water till four days ago. “However, due to the ongoing tussle between the two States, Haryana closed the sluice gates supplying raw water to Haiderpur plant resulting in the drop in production by around 15 MGD.”

The official said Delhi has also been facing problems vis-à-vis supply to the Wazirabad plant and the water level at the pond there was about 0.30 feet less than the mandated 674.50 feet level. “The Upper Yamuna River Board has also been writing on our behalf to the Haryana Government but the recent turn of events show that people’s woes are being grossly overlooked,” he added.
