Leh: Army rescues 400 civilians trapped in landslides

Srinagar: The Army and the police on Saturday rescued 400 civilians trapped in landslides at Khardungla on the Leh-Nubra road.

The civilians, including women and children, in 150 vehicles were trapped since Friday evening in multiple landslides in a stretch of 10 km at Khardung La on the Leh-Nubra road.

Police had joined rescue operations at Khardungla on Friday night to make way for the stranded vehicles.

One side of the road has been opened to the traffic.

The vehicles were trapped between South and North Pullu and the rescue operations were started on Friday night.

The people rescued are given given medical assistance at South Pullu, 25 km from Leh.

The landslides struck at Khardungla on the Leh-Nubra road on Friday morning, leaving 150 vehicles mostly carrying tourists including some foreigners stranded.

120 people were administered oxygen as oxygen levels were low in the area.

Many of the stranded passengers had on Friday complained of mountain sickness.
